Michael J.F. Barresi

Dr. Michael J. F. Barresi is a Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences and the Program in Neuroscience at Smith College. Hei attended Merrimack College and majored in Biology with a minor in Studio Art. Professor Barresi pursued his doctoral research on muscle fibre type development at Wesleyan University in the laboratory of Dr. Stephen Devoto after receiving his B.A. He finished his postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst in Dr. Rolf Karlstrom's laboratory, where he studied the development of commissure formation in the zebrafish forebrain.

Dr. Barresi's laboratory at Smith College studies the molecular and cellular mechanisms governing neural stem cell development, commissure formation, and neurodevelopmental responses to environmental teratogens. He has served on the Society for Developmental Biology's Professional Development and Education Committee. He is a classroom innovator, having pioneered the use of web conferencing, documentary filmmaking, and active learning pedagogies in Developmental Biology.

Professor Michael Barresi has successfully taught Developmental Biology course-based research laboratories since 2005. He developed the "Student Scientists" outreach programme as part of his NSF CAREER award to help train and inspire primary and secondary education teachers to incorporate the investigative curriculum into their classrooms. He received Smith College's Sherrerd Prize for Distinguished Teaching in 2012.

Scott F. Gilbert

Dr. Scott F. Gilbert is a Swarthmore College Howard A. Schneiderman Professor Emeritus and a Finland Distinguished Professor Emeritus at the University of Helsinki Institute of Biotechnology. He instructs in developmental biology, developmental genetics, and biology history. Following his B.A. from Wesleyan University, he went on to pursue graduate and postdoctoral studies at The Johns Hopkins University and the University of Wisconsin.

Scott has received several honours, including the first Viktor Hamburger Award for excellence in developmental biology education, the Alexander Kowalevsky Prize for evolutionary developmental biology, honorary degrees from the Universities of Helsinki, and Tartu, and the College de France's Medal of Francois I. He is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, a corresponding member of the St. Petersburg Society of Naturalists, and a member of Japan's National Institute of Basic Biology's International Advisory Board. He has chaired the Society for Developmental Biology's Professional Development and Education Committee.

Dr. Gilbert's research focuses on the developmental genetic mechanisms that allow the turtle to form its shell, as well as the mechanisms that allow plasticity and symbionts to contribute to development.
