About The Author

Heidi Smith

Heidi Smith

Dr. Heidi Smith leads the microbiology discipline at Front Range Community College in Fort Collins, CO, teaching various biology courses each semester, including anatomy/ physiology, microbiology, and biotechnology. Outside of the classroom, Heidi oversees a federal grant program designed to train and support underrepresented students for undergraduate research and transfer into four-year STEM degree programs. She is also an active member of the American Society for Microbiology and participated as a task force member in the development of their Curriculum Guidelines for Undergraduate Microbiology Education.

Marjorie Kelly Cowan

Marjorie Kelly Cowan

Professor Marjorie Kelly Cowan started teaching microbiology at the Miami University in 1993. Her specialty is teaching microbiology for allied health/pre-nursing students at the university’s Middletown campus. After working as a dental hygienist, Dr. Cowan got her Ph.D. at the University of Louisville and later worked at the University of Groningen in The Netherlands and at University of Maryland’s Center of Marine Biotechnology.

Marjorie has published (with her students) more than 24 research articles stemming from her work on bacterial adhesion mechanisms and plant-derived antimicrobial compounds. But her first love is teaching ― both doing it and studying how to do it better. Kelly is past chair of the Undergraduate Education Committee of the American Society for Microbiology. Her current research focuses on the student achievement gap associated with economic disparities, as well as literacy in the science classrooms. In her spare time, she reads, hikes, and still tries to (s)mother her 3 grown up kids.

This ebook, Cowan’s Microbiology: A Systems Approach 5th edition (PDF) is suited for all kinds of college students and doesn’t require any prerequisite knowledge of chemistry or biology. If you are interested in entering the health care profession in some way this PDF ebook will give you a very strong background in the biology of microorganisms without overwhelming you with unnecessary details. Don’t worry if you are not in the health professions. A grasp of this topic is important for everyone and can be attained with this textbook easily.
