About The Author

Brian Jones

Brian Jones

Dr. Brian Jones has won numerous teaching awards at Colorado State University throughout his 30 years teaching in the Department of Physics. In 2011, Dr. Jones was awarded the Robert A. Millikan Medal of the American Association of Physics Teachers for his work as director of the Little Shop of Physics.

Brian is actively exploring the effectiveness of methods of informal science education and how to extend these lessons to the classroom. He has been invited to give workshops on techniques of science instruction throughout the United States and in Chile, Belize, Azerbaijan, Mexico, Ethiopia, Norway, Namibia, and Slovenia.

Randall D. Knight

Randall D. Knight

Dr. Randall Knight or Randy, taught introductory physics for 32 years at California Polytechnic University and Ohio State University. He is Professor Emeritus of Physics at Cal Polytechnic Univ. Professor Knight received a Ph.D. in physics from the University of California, Berkeley and was a post-doctoral fellow at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics before joining the faculty at Ohio State University. It was at Ohio State that he began to learn about the research in physics education that, many years later, led to 5 Easy Lessons: Strategies for Successful Physics Teaching and this ebook, as well as College Physics: A Strategic Approach, co-authored with Stuart Field and Brian Jones. Randy’s research interests are in the field of environmental science and laser spectroscopy. When Dr. Knight is not in front of a computer, you can find him hiking, playing the piano, sea kayaking, or spending time with his wife Sally and six cats.

Stuart Field

Stuart Field

Professor Stuart Field has been interested in technology and science his whole life. While in school he built electronic circuits, telescopes, and computers. After attending Stanford University, he got a Ph.D. at the University of Chicago, where he studied the properties of materials at ultralow temperatures. After completing a postdoctoral position at MIT, Stuart held a faculty position at the University of Michigan. Currently, at Colorado State University, Dr. Field teaches a variety of physics courses, including algebra-based introductory physics, and was an early and enthusiastic adopter of Knight’s Physics for Scientists and Engineers. He maintains an active research program in the area of superconductivity.

College Physics: A Strategic Approach, 4th Edition, (PDF) expands its focus from how mixed majors college students learn physics to emphasizing why these students learn physics. The authors implement the best results from educational research and Mastering Physics metadata to provide fundamental physics in real-world instances that engage students and associate physics with other fields, including architecture, biological sciences, and natural resources. From these associations, science students not only learn in research-driven ways but also comprehend why they are taking the course and how it implements in other areas.

An interactive Pearson eText and extensive new media and encourage student interest while challenging misconceptions and improving critical thinking. New examples, explanations, and problems use real data from research to demonstrate physics at work in relevant situations and help college students see that physics is the science implicit in everything around them. Jones/Field/Knight’s College Physics: A Strategic Approach 4e, motivates today’s physics students to understand the big picture, attain crucial problem-solving skills, and come to class both confident and prepared.
