About The Author

Hugh D. Young

Hugh D. Young

Dr. Hugh D. Young (1930—2013) was an Emeritus Professor of Physics at Carnegie Mellon University. He earned both his graduate and undergraduate degrees from that university. He earned his Ph.D. in fundamental particle theory under the direction of the late Richard Cutkosky. Hugh joined the faculty of Carnegie Mellon in 1956 and retired in 2004. He also had two visiting professorships at the University of California, Berkeley.

Professor Young’s career was centered entirely on undergraduate education. He wrote several undergraduate-level textbooks, and in 1973 he became a coauthor with Mark Zemansky and Francis Sears for their well-known introductory textbooks. In addition to his role in Sears and Zemansky’s University Physics, he was the author of Sears and Zemansky’s College Physics.

Assist students see the connections between problem types and understand how to solve them

For over five decades, Sears and Zemansky’s College Physics has provided the most trustworthy foundation of physics education for students around the world. With the College Physics, 11th Edition, (PDF) author Phil Adams includes data from thousands of surveyed science students detailing their use and reliance on video tutorials, worked examples, and need for just-in-time remediation when working on homework problems and training for exams.

Driven by how students actually utilize the text and media today to prepare for their exams, the new edition adds worked examples and new Example Variation Problems in every chapter to help students see patterns and make links between problem types. They learn to identify when to use similar steps in solving the same problem type and build an understanding of problem-solving approaches, rather than simply plugging in an equation.

The expanded problem types and scaffolded in-problem support assist students in developing greater confidence in solving problems, broadening conceptual understanding, and strengthen quantitative reasoning skills for better exam performance.  All new problem sets are accessible in Mastering Physics with wrong-answer specific feedback together with a wealth of new wrong-answer feedback, hints, and eText links with 20% of end-of-chapter problems.
