About The Author

Richard A. Dunlap

Richard A. Dunlap

Dr. Richard A. Dunlap is a research professor at Dalhousie University's Department of Physics and Atmospheric Science. He graduated from Worcester Polytechnic Institute with a B.S. in Physics in 1974, Dartmouth College with an A.M. in Physics in 1976, and Clark University with a Ph.D. in Physics in 1978. Critical phenomena, amorphous materials, quasicrystals, hydrogen storage, magnetic materials, superconductivity, and materials for enhanced rechargeable batteries have all piqued his attention throughout the years.

Professor Dunlap has been a member of the Dalhousie University faculty since 1981. He was the Killam Research Professor of Physics from 2001 to 2006, and the Director of the Dalhousie University Institute for Research in Materials from 2009 to 2015. EXPERIMENTAL PHYSICS: MODERN METHODS, THE GOLDEN RATIO AND FIBONACCI NUMBERS, and AN INTRODUCTION TO THE PHYSICS OF NUCLEI AND PARTICLES are Professor Dunlap's other textbooks.

Dunlap’s Sustainable Energy 2nd Edition (PDF) assists university students to explore the present and future energy needs along with options for continued use of fossil fuels and alternative energy sources. Individual chapters thoroughly investigate every energy approach as the ebook includes both current energy production and future strategies. Students only need to be acquainted with freshman-level chemistry and physics. The textbook emphasizes the complexity of energy issues and the necessity for a multidisciplinary approach to solving today’s energy problems. Quantitative end-of-chapter problems require learners to analyze information, use material from prior chapters, correlate data from various sources, and infer graphical data, and interpolate values. College students see real problems met in producing and using energy and realize that while exact calculations are important, a broad-based analysis is usually the most appropriate.

Reviews

“The photos are fantastic, and the tables are simple to read. Many energy themes are well covered in this ebook. This is a good place to start learning about energy, its sources, applications, and future technological possibilities.”

“It is extremely popular among college students. The significant use of graphics in this textbook is one of its most notable qualities. Those are good examples. This is a fantastic textbook. This is one of the greatest textbooks available on the topic.”

“I believe the author goes to great lengths to define even the most basic terminology (at least for physicists) in order to make even the art student happy. The energy extra boxes are fantastic; they give a sort of build-up for the student’s curiosity. University students enjoy doing the examples because they are wonderful and plentiful. I really enjoy how the arguments flow and how the issues are organized. The solutions provided are methodologically clear and point back to the essential equations so that the topic can be revisited. I believe that a large number of vivid images, as well as a few well-chosen black-and-white images, serve to make the contents more understandable and accessible.”
