Matthew Lippman

Matthew Lippman

Dr. Matthew Lippman is a highly accomplished criminology, law, and justice professor at the University of Illinois Chicago, where he has taught for over 30 years. He has received numerous awards for outstanding teaching and is the author or co-author of several books on criminal law, criminal procedure, international human rights, and comparative law.

His work is highly regarded and cited in hundreds of academic publications by domestic and international courts and organizations. In addition to his teaching and writing, Professor Lippman has also served as an expert witness on international law and consulted with private organizations and branches of the U.S. government.

Lippman‘s ebook Contemporary Criminal Law, 5th Edition (PDF), combines traditional concepts with thought-provoking cases and engaging learning tools, a textbook that students consider exciting and instructors consider educationally valuable. The textbook covers both foundational and emerging legal topics such as cybercrime, terrorism, gangs, and hate crimes, illustrated by real-life examples that students connect with.

Clear explanations of criminal law and defenses are complemented by provocative, well-edited cases followed by discussion questions to stimulate critical thinking and in-class discussion. The ebook provides a contemporary perspective on criminal law, encouraging students to read and analyze the textbook actively. The updated Fifth Edition is enhanced throughout by new cases that offer the most up-to-date coverage of evolving legal opinions and developments in criminal law.
