About The Author

Howard Abadinsky

Howard Abadinsky

A graduate of Queens College of the City University of New York, Howard has an M.S.W. from Fordham University and a Ph.D. from New York University. Dr. Abadinsky is the author of several books, including Drug Use and Abuse 8th edition and Organized Crime 10th edition.

An insider’s view of the rapidly changing field of community corrections/probation and parole

Abadinsky’s Probation and Parole: Corrections in the Community, 13th Edition, (PDF) looks at the history of the field, and how it transitioned from a focus on treatment/rehabilitation and the indeterminate sentence toward a model based on control/law enforcement and the determinate sentence. Written by a former community corrections professional, the writer provides an insider’s view on how these changes impacted the roles and responsibilities of probation and parole officers. Contrary to competing texts, the author merges his experience with the practices of probation and parole agencies throughout the United States to give a realistic, state-of-the-art view of the field. Innovative topics examined and critiqued include: broken windows/community-based supervision, restorative justice, place-based supervision, evidence-based practice, motivational interviewing, cognitive-behavioral therapy, “truth-in-sentencing” and “three-strikes-and-you’re-out.” Moreover, this latest Thirteenth Edition features a comprehensive examination of how “tough on crime” and “war on drugs” has resulted in a need for “justice reinvestment” and a new emphasis on community-based correction.
