About The Author

Robert L. Norton

Robert L. Norton

Dr. Robert L. Norton got his undergraduate degrees in both industrial technology and mechanical engineering from Northeastern University and an MS in engineering design at Tufts University. He was awarded a Dr. Eng. (h.c.) by WPI in 2012.

Robert is a registered professional engineer in Massachusetts and Florida. He has extensive industrial experience in engineering design and manufacturing and many years’ experience teaching engineering design, computer science, mechanical engineering, and related subjects at Tufts University, Northeastern University, and Worcester Polytechnic Institute.

Dr. Norton has been on the faculty of Worcester Polytechnic Institute since 1981 and is currently Milton Prince Higgins II Distinguished Professor Emeritus in the mechanical engineering department. He taught graduate and undergraduate courses in mechanical engineering with an emphasis on kinematics, vibrations, design, and dynamics of machinery for 31 years at WPI before retiring from active teaching.

This is a general-interest trade ebook that explains the development of automotive engineering and technology from the start of the business before 1900 to the current day. Automotive Milestones, (PDF) describes how various elements and systems in the automobile work in layman’s terms, without resorting to mathematics, and emphasizes the key milestones in the historical development of automotive technology. All illustrations and photos are in full color. The aimed audience is older teens to adults of any age who are interested in the topic and may be involved in it as a hobby. Occasionally referred to as “gearheads” or “motorheads”, they form a huge market. Over the years, several of the author’s engineering students were in this class, and he often would see on-campus car clubs to explain the way things automotive worked, being careful to eliminate or damp down any complicated mathematics, as he does in this ebook. An Internet search found only names that are either “hard-engineering oriented” — like publications from the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) — or mere compilations of dates. eBooks in the latter category note the indicators but without hardly any explanation at all of how these developments actually function in a technical sense – which is the goal of this ebook.

Review

Automotive Milestones, by Robert L. Norton, is about all the tools that are needed in an automobile and how they work. The ebook consists of eight key chapters, each covering a major mechanical system of the automobile along with a summary chapter and appendices. There are numerous illustrations and photographs used throughout the ebook to support the concepts discussed.

The author has comprehensively researched the subject and leaves the reader with a new appreciation of what has been tried over approximately 250 years of the automobile history. The ebook is logically organized and plainly explained in a way that only a person with in-depth knowledge could do.

His latest book is Automotive Milestones which offers the cornerstones of a thorough understanding of automobile technology. If you are just looking for a common understanding of the automobile, looking for inspiration in support of a new idea, or just want a brief history of automotive milestones, this ebook is a must-read.” Parker Ackley, Antique Automobile Enthusiast
