About The Author

Christopher K. Mathews

Christopher K. Mathews

Dr. Christopher K. Mathews is an Oregon State University Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Biochemistry. He graduated from Reed College in 1958 with a B.A. in chemistry and the University of Washington with a Ph.D. in biochemistry (1962).
From 1963 to 1978, he was a member of the Yale and University of Arizona faculties.
He became Chair of the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics at Oregon State University, a position he held until 2002.

The enzymology and regulation of DNA precursor metabolism, as well as the intracellular coordination of deoxyribonucleotide synthesis and DNA replication, are two of his main research interests. Dr. Mathews was an Eleanor Roosevelt International Cancer Fellow at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm from 1984 to 1985, and he was a Tage Erlander Guest Professor at Stockholm University from 1994 to 1995.

Dr. Mathews has 185 research papers, book chapters, and reviews in the fields of molecular virology, metabolic regulation, nucleotide enzymology, and biochemical genetics to his credit. He worked on grants from the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation, and the Army Research Office from 1964 to 2012.
He is the coeditor of Bacteriophage T4 (1983) and Structural and Organizational Aspects of Metabolic Regulation, and the author of Bacteriophage Biochemistry (1971). (1990). He was the lead author of Biochemistry, a textbook for majors and graduate students, for four editions. He has taught biochemistry courses at the undergraduate, graduate, and medical school levels.

Spencer J. Anthony-Cahill

Spencer J. Anthony-Cahill

Dr. Spencer J. Anthony-Cahill is a Professor of Chemistry at Western Washington University (WWU) in Bellingham, Washington. Spencer received his bachelor's degree in chemistry from Whitman College and his doctorate in bioorganic chemistry from the University of California, Berkeley. His graduate work in Peter Schultz's laboratory focused on the biosynthetic incorporation of unnatural amino acids into proteins.

Dr. Spencer worked as an NIH postdoctoral fellow in Bill DeGrado's laboratory (then at DuPont Central Research) on de novo peptide design and the prediction of the tertiary structure of the HLH DNA-binding motif. He then worked as a research scientist in the biotechnology industry for five years, developing recombinant haemoglobin as a treatment for acute blood loss.

Professor Anthony-Cahill decided to pursue his long-held interest in teaching and moved to WWU in 1997, where he is still today. He received the Peter J. Elich Award for Excellence in Teaching from WWU in 2012.

Engage biochemistry students visually and through real-world applications – Biochemistry: Concepts and Connections 2nd edition (PDF) engages science students with a unique approach to visualization, synthesis of complex topics, and connections to the real world. The author team builds quantitative reasoning skills and provides students with a rich, chemical perspective on biological processes. The textbook emphasizes fundamental connections and concepts, showing how biochemistry relates to practical applications in agricultural sciences, medicine, environmental sciences, and forensics.

The newly updated and revised Second Edition integrates even more robust biochemistry-specific content in Mastering Chemistry, creating an interactive experience for today’s biochem students. New Threshold Concept Tutorials help students master the most challenging and critical ideas in biochemistry, while Interactive Case Studies connect course material to the real world by having students explore actual scientific data from primary literature. The 2nd Edition provides a seamlessly integrated learning experience via textbook, Mastering Chemistry, and an interactive Pearson eText (sold separately).
