About The Author

Cay S. Horstmann

Cay S. Horstmann

Dr. Cay S. Horstmann is a Java Champion and a professor of computer science at San Jose State University. He is also the author of Volumes I and II, Core Java®, Scala for the Impatient and Core Java SE 9 for the Impatient. He has written more than a dozen other ebooks for computer science students and professional programmers.

Brief Java: Early Objects 9th Edition (PDF) emphasizes on the essentials of effective learning and is appropriate for a two-semester introduction to programming sequence. This text demands no prior programming experience and only a little amount of high school algebra. Classes and objects and classes from the standard library are used where suitable in early sections with coverage on object-oriented design starting in Chapter 8. This step-by-step approach allows students to use objects throughout their study of the core algorithmic topics, without imparting bad habits that must be unlearned later.

Choosing the improved eText format allows students to develop their coding skills using progressive, targeted interactivities designed to integrate with the eText. All sections include open-ended review exercises, built-in activities, programming exercises, and projects to assist students in practicing programming and build confidence. These activities go much beyond simplistic multiple-choice questions and animations. They have been developed to guide programming students along a learning path for mastering the complexities of programming. College students show comprehension of programming structures, then practice programming with easy steps in scaffolded settings, and lastly write complete, automatically graded programs.

The perpetual access VitalSource Enhanced eText, when combined with your school’s learning management system, offers the capability to observe student progress in VitalSource SCORECenter and track grades for participation or homework.
