About The Author

Jason Overby

Jason Overby

Dr. Jason Overby received his B.S. degree in chemistry and political science from the University of Tennessee at Martin. Jason then received his Ph.D. in inorganic chemistry from Vanderbilt University (1997) studying main group and transition metal metallocenes and related compounds. Afterwards, Dr. Overby conducted postdoctoral research in transition metal organometallic chemistry at Dartmouth College. Dr. Overby began his academic career at the College of Charleston in 1999 as an assistant professor. Currently, Jason is an associate professor with teaching interests in general and inorganic chemistry. He is also interested in the integration of technology into the classroom, including the use of online homework. Additionally, he conducts research with undergraduates in organic and inorganic synthetic chemistry as well as computational organometallic chemistry.

Julia Burdge

Julia Burdge

Dr. Julia Burdge did most of her undergraduate work at Iowa State University, completing her bachelor’s degree and Master’s degree in inorganic chemistry at the University of South Florida in Tampa. She earned her doctroate in analytical chemistry at the University of Idaho. Her Master’s and doctoral research involved the development of instruments and methods for measuring ultra-trace concentrations of atmospheric sulfur compounds and the development of chemotherapeutic analogs of cisplatin. Over the past twenty years, Dr. Burdge has taught introductory and advanced courses in every division of the undergraduate chemistry curriculum, as well as interdisciplinary courses. Dr. Burdge also developed and taught a new introductory chemistry course for pre-service science teachers, and initiated and served as a mentor in a future faculty development program for graduate students and post-doctoral associates. Julia is currently affiliated with the University of Idaho, USA.

The Chemistry, Atoms First, 4th Edition (ePub/PDF) approach revolutionizes the teaching of general chemistry by presenting a clear and systematic method. It begins with the atom, the basic unit of matter, laying the foundation for comprehending complex chemical concepts. By mastering the nature of atoms and electrons, students then delve into the formation and properties of compounds. Only after this solid understanding of matter and atoms can they confidently explore advanced topics like stoichiometry, kinetics, equilibrium, and thermodynamics.

With the Atoms First 4E approach, instructors have the power to deliver a comprehensive and captivating narrative of general chemistry. This is not just a mere rearrangement of topics; it is a book that perfectly addresses the demands of the ever-growing atoms-first market. The fourth edition builds upon the trailblazing success of its predecessors, enhancing the student-centric pedagogical features that have made it a favored choice among professors and students alike.
