Dr. Edward Neukrug is a Professor of Counseling at Old Dominion University. Dr. Neukrug has made a substantial impact on the fields of counseling and human services. An author of over 11 textbooks and dozens of articles and chapters in ebooks, his works have been read by thousands of counseling and human services professionals and students. A leader in many counseling and human services associations, he has helped steer the fields toward the future. In addition, Professor Ed Neukrug was the architect of the original ethics code of the National Association of Human Services (NOHS) and served in a variety of capacities for professional associations. He has several open-access, free websites that focus on learning counseling theories, testing and assessment, understanding one's view of human nature, and more. Edward has received numerous awards for his work, including twice receiving the President's award from NOHS and recently receiving the American Counseling Association's (ACA) Fellows designation.

Written for helping professionals, Counseling Theory and Practice, 2nd edition, (PDF) explains what it means to be a useful helper, discusses foundations of classic counseling and psychotherapy theories, offers an overview of emerging theories, and provides college students the opportunity to develop their own approaches to counseling and psychotherapy practice.

The ebook is organized into four primary sections, each addressing theoretical schools. Section 1 reviews psychodynamic approaches, including Jungian therapy, psychoanalysis, and Adlerian therapy. Section 2 is dedicated to existential-humanistic approaches such as Gestalt therapy, existential therapy, and person-centered counseling, whereas Section 3 discusses cognitive-behavioral approaches, including behavior therapy, rational-emotive behavior therapy, cognitive behavior therapy, and reality therapy. Section 4 explains post-modern therapies and explores the relatively new approaches of solution-focused brief therapy, narrative therapy, and relational cultural therapy, a form of feminist therapy. The last chapter explores a number of more recent and emerging theories.
