Copley’s Essentials of Accounting for Governmental and Not-for-Profit Organizations, 15th edition, really zeroes in on making external financial statements. This can be tricky when you’re dealing with government reports. Just like in the previous editions, this one is perfect for teachers who want to give their students a straightforward breakdown of the material, kind of like how it works in the real world. Basically, everyday activities get documented at the fund level, using the accounting rules for those fund financial statements. For the government activities, they use the modified accrual basis. Then, those fund-based statements are used to create the government-wide statements. Plus, they even lay out how to prepare those government-wide statements in an Excel worksheet, which is pretty handy!
