About the Author

Chia-Shun Yih (1918 – 1997), born in Kweiyang, China, was Stephen P. Timoshenko Distinguished University Professor Emeritus at the University of Michigan. He is remembered by his students as a really inpiring teacher whose enthusiasm and excitement for his subject were contagious.

His published work includes well over 100 scientific papers and 2 books: Fluid Mechanics: a Concise Introduction to the Theory and Dynamics of Nonhomogeneous Fluids — later revised as Stratified Flows

His numerous honors include the Guggenheim Fellowship, the Alexander von Humboldt Senior Scientist Award (Germany), the Theodore von Karman Medal (Amer. Soc. of Civil Engineers), the Henry Russel Lectureship (University of Michigan), the Stephan S. Attwood Award (Univ. of Michigan), the Fluid Dynamics Prize (Amer. Physical Soc.), and the Otto Laporte Award (APS).
