About The Author

Donelson R. Forsyth

Donelson R. Forsyth

Dr. Donelson R. Forsyth, a social psychologist, writes and studies about groups, leadership, and ethics. His recent research focuses on the group, individual, and cultural differences in the degree of idealism and relativism. An authority on group dynamics -- whose textbook Group Dynamics is in its 7th edition -- Don studies groups' reactions to success and failure and the interpersonal functions of groups, including small group decision making.

Dr. Forsyth is currently on the faculty of the Jepson School faculty, where he holds the Leo K. and Gayle Thorsness Chair of Ethical Leadership. He received a BA degree from Florida State University, and his Ph.D. degree from the University of Florida. He served on the faculty of Virginia Commonwealth University as a Professor in the Department of Psychology with a joint appointment in sociology from 1978 to 2005.

Forsyth’s Group Dynamics, 7th Edition, (PDF) emphasizes empirical studies, research supporting a theoretical understanding of groups, and extended case studies to illustrate the application of concepts to actual groups. Esteemed author Donelson R. Forsyth builds every chapter around a real-life case, drawing on examples from a range of disciplines including law, education, psychology, sociology, and political science. Tightly weaving concepts and familiar ideas together, the textbook takes college students beyond simple exposure to basic principles and research findings to a deeper understanding of each and every topic.
