About The Author

Ricki Lewis

Ricki Lewis

Dr. Ricki Lewis’s career in communicating science began with earning a Ph.D. in Genetics from Indiana University in 1980. It quickly blossomed into writing for magazines and newspapers and writing the introductory textbook Life. Since then, Rickie has taught a variety of life science courses and has authored the textbook Human Genetics: Concepts and Applications and books about stem cells, gene therapy, and scientific discovery. She is a genetic counselor for a large medical practice, teaches a graduate online course in "Genethics" at Albany Medical College, and writes for Genetic Literacy Project, Medscape Medical News, Rare Disease Report, and medical journals. Ricki also writes the popular DNA Science blog at the Public Library of Science and is a frequent public speaker.

Human Genetics: Concepts and Applications, 14th Edition represents a significant evolution in the field, as it extends human genetics beyond the confines of traditional academic and medical contexts to emerge as an area of information science that holds personal significance for individuals while also influencing societal norms. As individuals learn about their genetic backgrounds, they gain the ability to navigate and shape their surroundings in healthier ways, leading to more informed choices regarding their lifestyles and overall well-being. Consequently, the insights derived from genetic knowledge serve not only to educate but also to empower individuals, enabling them to take charge of their health decisions. This dual function of informing and empowering underscores the increasing relevance of genetics in everyday life.
