About the ebook

An instinctive yet precise introduction to probability theory, stochastic processes, and probabilistic models used in science, economics, engineering, and related fields. Introduction to Probability, 2nd edition, (PDF) is a significant revision of the 1st edition, including reorganizing old material and including new material. The length of the ebook has increased by around 25 percent. The key new feature of the 2nd edition is detailed introduction to Bayesian and classical statistics.

The ebook is the currently used textbook for “Probabilistic Systems Analysis,” an introductory probability course at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, joined by a large number of undergraduate and graduate students. The ebook covers the fundamentals of probability theory (probabilistic models, multiple random variables, discrete and continuous random variables, and limit theorems), which are usually part of a first course on the subject, as well as the basic concepts and methods of statistical inference, both classical and Bayesian. It also includes, several more advanced topics, from which an instructor can select to match the goals of a particular course. These topics include sums of random variables, transforms, a reasonably detailed introduction to Poisson, Bernoulli, and Markov processes.

The ebook strikes a balance between simplicity in exposition and sophistication in analytical reasoning. Few of the more mathematically rigorous analysis has been just innately explained in the textbook but is advanced in detail (at the level of advanced calculus) in the several solved theoretical problems.

Written by two lecturers of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and members of the respected US National Academy of Engineering, the ebook has been widely approved for classroom use in introductory probability courses within the USA abroad.

Review:

…it trains the intuition to obtain probabilistic feeling. This ebook describes every single concept it enunciates. This is its main strength, deep explanation, and not only examples that happen to explain. Tsitsiklis and Bertsekas leave nothing to chance. The probability of misunderstanding a concept or not understanding it is just… zero. Numerous figures, examples, and end-of-chapter problems strengthen the understanding. Also of invaluable help is the ebook’s website, where solutions to the problems can be found together with much more probability information and problem sets. –Vladimir Botchev, Analog Dialogue,
