Gabriela Martorell

Dr. Gabriela Alicia Martorell was born in Seattle, Washington, but moved as a toddler to Guatemala. At eight, she returned to the United States and lived in Northern California until her undergraduate training at the University of California, Davis. She graduated from the University of California, Santa Barbara with a Ph.D. in Developmental and Evolutionary Psychology and an interdisciplinary emphasis in Human Development after receiving her B.S. in psychology. She is currently the chair of the Institutional Review Board and a professor of psychology at Virginia Wesleyan University.

In addition to teaching courses in introductory psychology, lifespan human development, culture and development, evolutionary psychology, research methods, original research projects, and capstone community-based learning courses in early childhood education and adulthood and aging, Gabi also keeps a busy teaching schedule. She is dedicated to mentoring, advising, and educating.

Experience Human Development, 15th Edition (PDF) helps college students explore the human side of development through exposure to culture and diversity, evaluation of the science on human development, and immersion in practical applications. Long noted for its wide-ranging coverage of diversity and human development questions, the 15th edition now has a lengthy Guide to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in the preface to summarize and provide transparency on the relevant changes to this important topic. The textbook combines robust scholarship, citations from the latest research, and a rich and respectful coverage of diversity and equity issues, so that all learners can see themselves within this program. McGraw Hill Connect’s® digital learning tools are invaluable in helping students synthesize and master the broad scope of content of the lifespan development course.
