About The Author

David C. Lay

David C. Lay

Dr. David C. Lay (late) got a B.A. from Aurora University (Illinois), and an M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of California at Los Angeles. David Lay was an educator and research mathematician for over 40 years, mainly at the University of Maryland, College Park. He also served as a visiting professor at the Free University in Amsterdam, the University of Amsterdam, and the University of Kaiserslautern, Germany. He published more than 30 research articles on functional analysis and linear algebra.

As a founding member of the NSF-sponsored Linear Algebra Curriculum Study Group, Dr. Lay led the current movement to modernize the linear algebra curriculum. Lay was also a co-author of several mathematics textbooks, including Introduction to Functional Analysis, Calculus and Its Applications, and Linear Algebra Gems–Assets for Undergraduate Mathematics.

David C. Lay got four awards for teaching excellence, including, in 1996, the title of Distinguished Scholar–Teacher of the University of Maryland.

In 2018, David passed away, but his legacy continues to benefit linear algebra students as they study the subject in his widely acclaimed textbooks.

Judi J. McDonald

Judi J. McDonald

Dr. Judi J. McDonald holds a B.Sc. in Mathematics from the University of Alberta and an M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin. As a professor of mathematics, she has over 40 publications in linear algebra research journals, and more than 20 students have completed graduate degrees in linear algebra under her supervision. She is an associate dean of the Graduate School at Washington State University and a former chair of the Faculty Senate.

Dr. McDonald has received many teaching awards including the Inspiring Teaching Award at the University of Regina and the Thomas Lutz College of Arts and Sciences Teaching Award at Washington State University. Throughout her career, Judy has been an active member of the International Linear Algebra Society and the Association for Women in Mathematics, and has also been a member of the Canadian Mathematical Society, the Mathematical Association of America, the American Maths Society, and the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics.

Steven R. Lay

Steven R. Lay

Dr. Steven Lay began his teaching career at Aurora University (Illinois) in 1971, after get an M.A. and a Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of California at Los Angeles. He joined the mathematics faculty at Lee University (Tennessee) and has been there ever since. Since then he has supported his brother David Lay in refining and expanding the scope of this popular linear algebra textbook, including writing most of Chapters 8 and 9. Steven is also the author of three college-level mathematics textbooks: Analysis with an Introduction to Proof, Convex Sets and Their Applications, and Principles of Algebra.

With traditional linear algebra textbooks, the course is relatively easy for most of the students during the early stages as the material is presented in a familiar, concrete setting. However, college students often hit a wall when abstract concepts are introduced. Instructors seem to agree that certain concepts (such as spanning, linear independence, vector space, subspace, and linear transformations) are not easily understood and require time to assimilate. These concepts are fundamental to the study of linear algebra, so college students’ understanding of them is vital to mastering the subject. This etextbook, Linear Algebra and Its Applications 5th edition (PDF) makes these concepts more accessible by introducing them early in a familiar, concrete Rn setting, developing them gradually, and returning to them throughout the textbook so that when they are discussed in the abstract, all students are readily able to understand.
