About The Author

John E. Schaufelberger

Len Holm

Len Holm

Professor Len Holm is a well-known author, constructor, manager, and lecturer who teaches at the University of Washington.

Unlike the majority of construction project management textbooks out there, Management of Construction Projects: A Constructor’s Perspective, 2nd edition (PDF) takes a distinctive approach by setting itself in the context of a single and real-world construction project throughout and also by looking at construction project management from a different, i.e. the constructor’s perspective. This project-based learning approach emphasizes the knowledge, skills, and techniques students require to become really successful project managers.

This 2nd edition of Management of Construction Projects uses a larger, brand new, and more challenging case study to take college students through key stages of the process, including:

  • project leadership and ethics;
  • contracts and subcontracting;
  • quality, cost control, and safety;
  • scheduling, estimating, and planning;
  • disputes, claims, and project close-outs;
  • and, supply chain and materials management.

Also new to this second edition is coverage of emergent industry trends such as LEED, LEAN, and BIM. The ebook contains essential features such as exercises, review questions, and chapter summaries, while example schedules, plans, contracts, and other documents are stored on a companion website. Written in straightforward language from a constructor’s perspective, this etextbook gives a realistic overview and review of the roles of project managers and everything they need to know in order to see a great, successful project through from the start to finish.

Reviews

“Management of Construction Projects, 2nd edition is the most valuable textbook I’ve seen during my time as an educator. The content directly applies to the challenges encountered by construction professionals every day. The example documents provide excellent references for students as they are learning about the construction industry. If our entire curriculum had to use only one ebook, it would be Management of Construction Projects 2e.” — Joseph Fradella III P.E., Senior Instructor, School of Civil & Construction Engineering, Oregon State University, USA

This textbook is a perfect fit for construction management programs, as it is the only one available that is written in a straightforward language to and from the perspective of the constructor. Students are shown not only the technical considerations but how the process of construction is managed throughout. Its use of a single case study shows the process in its entirety how it is brought together. It is the best textbook available on the subject for future constructors.” — James W. Jones, Ed.D. Construction Management Program Director, Ball State University, USA

I was a University of Washington construction management student over 20 years ago learning from Len Holm and John. The knowledge they provided has served me well throughout my career. Their new ebook is the definitive guide to all aspects of being a successful project manager at any contracting firm. I would highly recommend it as required reading for anyone with a career in building design, construction, or project development.” — Patrick McQueen, Senior Project Manager, Lease Crutcher Lewis, USA
