Deitra Leonard Lowdermilk

Dr. Deitra Leonard Lowdermilk, FAAN, RNC, Ph.D., is the Clinical Professor Emerita at the School of Nursing, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC-CH). She received her BSN from East Carolina University and her MEd and Ph.D. in Education from UNC-CH. Lowdermilk is certified in In-Patient Obstetrics by the National Certification Corporation.

Deitra is also a fellow in the American Academy of Nursing. She has repeatedly been selected as Classroom and Clinical Teacher of the Year by graduating seniors. In addition to being a nurse educator for over 34 years, she has clinical experience as a public health nurse and as a staff nurse in labor and delivery, postpartum, and newborn units, and has worked in gynecologic surgery and cancer care units. She was a recipient of the Educator of the Year Award from both the District IV Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN) and the North Carolina Nurses Association. She also received the 2005 AWHONN Excellence in Education Award.

Dr. Lowdermilk is also the co-author of Maternal Child Nursing Care (5th edition) and Maternity Nursing (8th edition). Her most significant contribution to nursing has been to promote excellence in nursing practice and education in women’s health through the integration of knowledge into practice.

In fall 2010, the East Carolina University College of Nursing named the Neonatal Intensive Care and Midwifery Laboratory in honor of Professor Deitra. In 2011 she was named one of the first 40 nurses inducted into the College of Nursing Hall of Fame.

Marilyn J. Hockenberry

Dr. Marilyn J. Hockenberry, RN, FAAN, PNP-BC, PhD, is the Bessie Baker Professor of Nursing at Duke University School of Nursing. Marilyn, a distinguished leader in pediatric oncology and evidence-based outcomes and practices, is actively involved in the School’s cancer-related research initiatives and teaches in the DNP program. She also serves as one of the eleven chairs of the Duke Institutional Review Board.

Before coming to Duke, Dr. Hockenberry was Professor of Pediatrics in the Hematology/Oncology Division at Baylor College of Medicine. She also served as the nurse scientist for the hospital and director of the pediatric nurse practitioner program in the Texas Children’s Cancer Center at Texas Children’s Hospital from 1994 to 2012. At the children's hospital, Mary served as director of the Center for Research and Evidence-based Practice from 2002 to 2009 and director of the Evidence-based Outcomes Center from 2004 to 2009.

Dr. Shannon E. Perry is the Professor Emerita, School of Nursing, San Francisco State University, California. She got her diploma in nursing from St. Joseph Hospital School of Nursing, Illinois; a baccalaureate in Nursing from Marquette University, an MSN from the University of Colorado Medical Center, and a Ph.D. in Educational Psychology with a specialization in Child Development from Arizona State University. Dr. Perry completed a 2-year postdoctoral fellowship in perinatal nursing at the University of California, San Francisco, as a Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Nurse Scholar. She has had clinical experience as a head nurse, staff nurse, and supervisor in surgical nursing, pediatrics, gynecology, obstetrics, and neonatal nursing. Shannon has taught in schools of nursing in several states for over 35 years and was the interim director and director of the School of Nursing and director of a Child and Adolescent Development baccalaureate program at SFSU.

Professor Perry is the co-author of Maternal Child Nursing Care, Maternity Nursing, and Clinical Companion for Maternity & Newborn Nursing and has authored numerous articles and chapters on maternal-newborn topics and the legal aspects of nursing.

Dr. Perry’s experience in international nursing includes teaching international nursing courses in Ireland, Italy, UK, Thailand, Ghana, and China and participating in health missions in Kenya, Ghana, and Honduras. She is participating in establishing a school of nursing in Kenya, has supported the establishment of the library, and has had a wing of a dormitory named after her.
