About The Author

Gregory Pence

Gregory Pence

Dr. Gregory E. Pence is a professor in the Department of Philosophy at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). An expert in bioethics, Greg has written several books and has testified about reproductive ethics and cloning before the United States Congress and the California Senate.

Greg graduated from Wheaton High School in Glenmont, Md, and cum laude in 1970 with a B.S. in Philosophy from William and Mary and a Ph.D. in Philosophy in 1974 from the New York University, writing under visiting Australian bioethicist Peter Singer.

Dr. Pence directs UAB's competitive Early Medical School Acceptance Program (EMSAP) and taught ethics for over 34 years at the University of Alabama School of Medicine. In 2006, Samford University awarded him a Pellegrino Medal for achievement in medical ethics.

His most-known work has labeled him as a rebel in the scientific community. As displayed in his many books on the subject of cloning, he is one of the few bioethicists who believe in human cloning. He believes that human cloning should not be banned but rather accepted in modern society as a medical marvel. His opinion is illustrated in his many papers and ebooks about the theory and future of human cloning.

His textbook, "Medical Ethics", is one of the field's standard textbooks. At UAB, Gregory has won several teaching awards. In 2010, he coached the UAB team that won the national championship of the Intercollegiate Ethics Bow. He also coached the UAB team that won the national championship of the Bioethics Bowl in 2011 at Duke University and 2016 at Florida State.

Gregory Pence helped found the Bioethics field and has published in this area for over 40 years. In this textbook, Medical Ethics: Accounts of Ground-Breaking Cases, 7th edition, (PDF), Pence’s single, authorial voice integrates descriptions of some of the most famous bioethics cases and their issues. The textbook is the only one that follows cases over decades to tell readers what did, and often, what did not happen. This 7th edition retains in-depth discussion of famous cases while providing detailed analysis of newly raised or updated issues.
