About The Author

John D. Anderson

Dr. John Anderson studied at the University of Florida, earning a Bachelor of Aeronautical Engineering degree in 1959 with outstanding honors. He served as a Lieutenant and Task Scientist at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base's Aerospace Research Laboratory from 1959 to 1962. He received National Science Foundation and NASA Fellowships to attend Ohio State University from 1962 to 1966, where he earned a Ph.D. in Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering. As Chief of the Hypersonics Group, he joined the U.S. Naval Ordnance Laboratory in 1966. He was appointed chairman of the University of Maryland's department of aerospace engineering in 1973 and has served as professor of aerospace engineering there since 1980.

The response to the first three editions of Modern Compressible Flow: With Historical Perspective from faculty, students and practicing professionals has been overwhelmingly favorable. Therefore, this new Modern Compressible Flow 4th Edition (PDF) preserves much of this successful content while adding important new components. It preserves the author’s informal writing style that talks to the reader, gains the readers’ interest, and makes the study of compressible flow an enjoyable experience. Moreover, it blends the classical nature of the subject with modern aspects of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and high-temperature gas dynamics, so important to modern applications of compressible flow. In short, this book is a unique teaching and learning experience.
