About The Author

Dana S. Dunn

Dr. Dana S. Dunn got his B.A. in psychology from Carnegie Mellon University and his Ph.D. in social psychology from the University of Virginia. He is Professor of Psychology and former chair of the Psychology Department at Moravian College in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.

Rehabilitation psychologists have long contended that environmental constraints, such as the absence of ramps, the lack of Braille signs, and the attitudes of the non-disabled, create more significant social barriers and limitations for people with disabilities (PWDs) than the disabilities themselves. In essence, as social psychologist Kurt Lewin argued, situational factors, including how others perceive and treat individuals with disabilities, often have a more significant impact on the experience of disability than the personal characteristics of the individuals themselves. Therefore, the experience of disability is influenced by a range of psychosocial forces, some of which enhance and others that hinder daily life. For a comprehensive understanding and effective interventions, psychological science must focus on how the disabled person and their environment interact. The ebook “Understanding the Experience of Disability: Perspectives from Social and Rehabilitation Psychology,” presents chapters written by social and rehabilitation psychologists who explore how social psychological theory can enrich our understanding of the experience of disability and rehabilitation.

The ebook is organized into four sections covering established areas of study (e.g., stigma, social biases, stereotyping), mainstream topics (e.g., women, culture and race, aging), emerging issues (e.g., implicit attitudes, family and parenting issues, positive psychology), and matters of injustice, advocacy, and social policy (e.g., perceived injustice, disability advocacy, policy implications). In addition to benefiting advanced undergraduate and graduate students and professional audiences, such as researchers and practitioners, the book will also provide insight for families and caregivers of PWDs, policymakers, and PWDs themselves, offering an understanding of the social psychological processes associated with disability.
