Contemporary research on major emotional disorders focuses on their commonalities instead of their differences. This research continues to give support for a unified transdiagnostic approach to the treatment of these disorders that reflects their commonalities and is applicable to a variety of emotional problems.

Unified Protocol for Transdiagnostic Treatment of Emotional Disorders, 2nd Edition, (PDF) offers an alternative to disorder-specific treatments of numerous emotional disorders, designed to be applicable to the extensive range of anxiety and other disorders with strong emotional components. The Therapist Guide and supplementary client Workbook presents an eight-module therapy program that puts substantial emphasis on emotion-focused approaches, assisting clients to confront and experience challenging emotions while teaching them how to regulate those emotions. Expanded significantly in this 2nd edition, the volume offers guidance on using the Unified Protocol (UP) to take up problems not only with anxiety, but also with depression, eating disorders, substance use, non-suicidal self-injury, and anger. Treatment procedures have been further explained and more guidance is provided to practitioners on how to present main treatment concepts. Chapters brand new to this revised edition introduce functional assessment and explain how to offer the UP in a group format, while patient materials have been streamlined, revised, and made more user-friendly.
