About The Author

A. Lewis Ford

Hugh D. Young

Hugh D. Young

Dr. Hugh D. Young (1930—2013) was an Emeritus Professor of Physics at Carnegie Mellon University. He earned both his graduate and undergraduate degrees from that university. He earned his Ph.D. in fundamental particle theory under the direction of the late Richard Cutkosky. Hugh joined the faculty of Carnegie Mellon in 1956 and retired in 2004. He also had two visiting professorships at the University of California, Berkeley.

Professor Young’s career was centered entirely on undergraduate education. He wrote several undergraduate-level textbooks, and in 1973 he became a coauthor with Mark Zemansky and Francis Sears for their well-known introductory textbooks. In addition to his role in Sears and Zemansky’s University Physics, he was the author of Sears and Zemansky’s College Physics.

Roger A. Freedman

Roger A. Freedman

Dr. Roger A. Freedman is a Lecturer in Physics at the University of California, Santa Barbara. He was an undergraduate at the University of California campuses in San Diego and did his doctoral research in nuclear theory at Stanford University under the direction of Professor J. Dirk Walecka. Roger came to UCSB in 1981 after 3 years of research and teaching at the University of Washington.

At UCSB, Professor Freedman has taught in both the College of Creative Studies and the Department of Physics. He has published research in elementary particle physics, nuclear physics, and laser physics. In recent years, he has worked to make physics lectures a more interactive experience through the use of classroom response systems and pre-lecture videos.

University Physics with Modern Physics, Technology Update, 13th International Edition, (PDF) continues to set the standard for clarity and rigor combined with effective teaching and research-based innovation. The 13e Technology Update contains QR codes throughout the textbook, allowing students to use their tablet or smartphone to instantly watch interactive videos about related demonstrations or problem-solving strategies. University Physics is known for its exceptionally broad, deep, and thoughtful set of worked examples-key tools for developing both problem-solving skills and physical understanding. The 13th revised edition revises all the Examples and Problem-solving Strategies to be more brief and direct while maintaining the 12th Edition’s consistent, structured approach and a strong emphasis on modeling as well as math. To assist students to tackle challenging as well as routine problems, the 13e adds Bridging Problems to every chapter, which poses a difficult, multi-concept problem, and presents a skeleton solution guide in the form of questions and hints. The textbook’s rich problem sets-developed and polished over six decades-are upgraded to add larger numbers of problems that are biomedically oriented or demand calculus. The problem-set revision is run by detailed student-performance data gathered nationally through MasteringPhysics(R), making it likely to fine-tune the reliability, effectiveness, and difficulty of individual problems. Complementing the accessible and clear textbook, the figures use a simple graphic style that emphasizes physics. They also include explanatory annotations-a technique demonstrated to enhance learning.
