About The Author

Conrad Kottak

Conrad Kottak

Dr. Conrad Phillip Kottak is an American anthropologist and professor emeritus at the University of Michigan since 1968. He earned his Ph.D. from Columbia University and has researched in Brazil and Madagascar, authoring books like Window on Humanity and Anthropology: The Exploration of Human Diversity. Kottak argues that American legends, such as Star Trek and the Thanksgiving story, are evolving into a modern mythology. He has received notable awards, including a teaching excellence award at Michigan in 1992 and the AAA/Mayfield Award in 1999. He was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 2008 and is the most cited author in anthropology syllabi, according to the Open Syllabus Project.

Mirror for Humanity A Concise Introduction to Cultural Anthropology 13E serves as a compact introduction to sociocultural anthropology, while also addressing linguistic and applied anthropology. Its concise format allows instructors to incorporate additional readings—like case studies and other materials—into a single semester course.

This textbook is also suitable for a quarter system, where more traditional, lengthier texts may be impractical. In addition to introducing fundamental concepts and themes in cultural anthropology, Mirror for Humanity 13th Edition  seeks to highlight the importance of anthropology in our contemporary world. The ebook aspires to cultivate an appreciation for the rich cultural diversity within anthropology and to illustrate how an anthropological perspective can enhance students’ understanding of their own experiences in the classroom.
