Eric Mash

Eric Mash

Dr. Eric Mash is a professor of psychology at University of Calgary (Canada), where he enjoys teaching undergraduate classes in behavior modification, abnormal child psychology, and developmental psychopathology as well as graduate classes in clinical psychology, specifically in child assessment, child psychopathology, and child psychotherapy. He earned his Ph.D. in clinical psychology at Florida State University (USA), and completed his residency in clinical child psychology at Oregon Health and Sciences University in Portland, Oregon (USA).

Dr. Mash commits much of his energy and time outside of the classroom to researching the topics of abnormal child psychology, child psychotherapy, child and family assessment, and child development. Particularly interested in attention-deficit disorder and conduct problems, and in families in which children have been physically abused, he has contributed and published many journal articles and textbooks on these topics. He is also a Fellow of the Canadian and American Psychological Associations, and has served on the editorial boards of many prestigious journals and grant agencies at local and federal levels.

Through a thoughtful and accurate balance of developmental, clinical-diagnostic, and experimental approaches to child and adolescent psychopathology, Eric Mash and David Wolfe’s Abnormal Child Psychology 7th edition (PDF) remains one of the most scholarly, authoritative, and comprehensive textbooks in the market. It is organized to reflect DSM-5 categories, dimensional approaches to classification, and evidence-based treatment and assessment. Accessible to a broad range of readers, the ebook traces the developmental course of each disorder, showing how child psychopathology involves psychological, biological, and sociocultural factors interacting with a kid’s environment. Case histories, first-person accounts, and case examples illustrate the approaches used to describe disorders and bring theories to life. The best-selling author team also consistently illustrates how troubled children behave in their natural settings: schools, communities, and homes. Up-to-date and forward-looking, the textbook covers dimensional approaches to classification as well as evidence-based treatment and assessment, contemporary research, and the latest theories related to the predominantly inattentive ADHD subtype, the triple vulnerability model of anxiety, early-onset and the developmental propensity model of conduct disorder, depression, the tripartite model in children, and autism.

Reviews

Overall, I’m very impressed with your textbook, and I plan to continue using it. It is obvious that you both have been extremely careful in research in this field and covering issues. The textbook is well-written, and the boxed features and little case vignettes blend nicely with the thorough coverage of research and research issues.”

“I find this ebook much more interesting and engaging than the textbook I currently use and far better in a number of ways from other ebooks on the market. I am pleased with the integration of empirical findings throughout this textbook. The use of cases in each chapter will help engage college students and facilitate communication of key concepts.”

“The PDF ebook’s major points are richly studded with relevant citations of the research literature, to which the interested students (or professors!) can turn for more information. . . . The inclusion of illustrative case material greatly enriches the ebook, without disrupting the ‘flow’ of the presentation of information. Pedagogically, this is a great move, as is the inclusion of the occasional flashes of humor and wit, and of the occasional cartoon!. . . Overall, I believe this textbook to be consistently very readable, characterized by very current scholarship, and a notable advance over available competitors.”

“This is an outstanding etext, visually appealing, beautifully rendered, and intellectually first-rate. It is undoubtedly the best college textbook I have encountered on the subject, covering all the major disorders in a way that is informative to both experts and novices alike. Richly referenced and sprinkled throughout with interesting and instructive case anecdotes, this etextbook is scientifically state-of-the art. There simply is no better textbook for introducing undergraduate students to the subject of child psychopathology.”
