About The Author

Bertram G. Katzung

Bertram G. Katzung

Dr. Bertram Katzung got his M.D. degree from the State University of New York, Syracuse in 1957 and the Ph.D. in Pharmacology from the University of California, San Francisco in 1962. After an internship at Moffitt Hospital, he joined the Department of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics (now CMP) at UCSF in 1958. Dr. Katzung was Acting Chair of the Department from 1978 to 1981. His research focused on cardiac function, especially cardiac cellular electrical activity, as affected by drugs, including digitalis and antiarrhythmic agents.

Professor Bertram Katzung directed the Department’s teaching program for all professional students from 1972 through 1995.

Organized to reflect the syllabi in many pharmacology courses and in integrated curricula, Katzung’s Basic and Clinical Pharmacology 14th Edition (PDF) covers the important concepts college students need to know about the science of pharmacology and its application to clinical practice. Selection of the subject matter and order of its presentation are based on the authors’ many years’ experience in teaching this material to thousands of medical, dental, pharmacy, podiatry, nursing, and other health science students.

To be as clinically relevant as possible, the latest 14th edition of the textbook Basic and Clinical Pharmacology includes sections that specifically address the clinical choice and use of drugs in patients and the monitoring of their effects, and case studies that introduce clinical problems in many chapters. Presented in full color and enhanced by more than 300 illustrations (many new to this edition), Basic & Clinical Pharmacology 14e features numerous summary tables and diagrams that encapsulate important information.
