About The Author

Neil V. Watson

Neil V. Watson

Dr. Neil V. Watson's work on topics ranging from the neural control of reproductive behavior to the effects of steroids on cell survival to human cognitive sex differences has appeared in a variety of journals, including the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science, and Brain Research and Journal of Neuroscience.

Dr. Watson and the members of his lab at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, Canada study sex-related aspects of the function and structure of the nervous system, with ongoing grant support from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada. He got his undergraduate and master's degrees from the University of Western Ontario and his Ph.D. from the University of British Columbia. Following a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of California, Berkeley, Neil joined the faculty at SFU in 1996 where he is now Professor of Neuroscience in the Department of Psychology. He teaches biological psychology to hundreds of graduate and undergraduate students every year.

S. Marc Breedlove

Dr. Stephen Marc Breedlove, the Barnett Rosenberg Professor of Neuroscience at Michigan State University, has written more than 125 scientific articles investigating the role of hormones in shaping the developing and adult nervous system, publishing in journals including Nature, ScienceNature Neuroscience, and the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science.

Dr. Breedlove is also passionate about teaching in the classroom, and in the greater community through interviews with the Los Angeles Times, New York Times, Washington Post, and Newsweek, as well as broadcast programs such as Good Morning America, All Things Considered, and Sixty Minutes. He has active grant support from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke and the National Institute of Mental Health. He is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the Association for Psychological Science.

Instructors of behavioral neuroscience are faced with the challenge of how to teach the course’s complex material in an accessible and relatable, yet comprehensive way for undergraduate students. For over 20 years, Breedlove and Watson’s Behavioral Neuroscience 9th edition (PDF) has successfully solved these problems by presenting the most current, clear, definitive, and authoritative introduction to the field. Using stellar examples of today’s most exciting research, an unparalleled art program that clarifies even complex biological processes, visual summaries to remind college students of the principle findings presented in each chapter, and a comprehensive suite of digital support tools—including animations with built-in assessments that help test the university student’s knowledge of biological and behavioral processes and neuroanatomy—Behavioral Neuroscience, Ninth Edition, remains the best resource available to teach introductory behavioral neuroscience and neuroscience courses.
