About The Author

Martin Silberberg

Martin Silberberg

Dr. Martin S. Silberberg received his B.S. in chemistry from the City University of New York in 1966 and his Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of Oklahoma, in 1971. Dr. Martin then accepted a research position at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, where he studied the chemical nature of neurotransmission and Parkinson's disease. In 1977, he joined the faculty of Simon's Rock College of Bard (Massachusetts), a liberal arts college known for its excellence in teaching small classes of highly motivated college students. As Head of the Natural Sciences Major and Director of Premedical Studies, Martin taught courses in organic chemistry, biochemistry, general chemistry, and nonmajors chemistry. The close student contact afforded him insights into how college students learn chemistry, where they have difficulties, and what strategies can help them succeed. In 1983, Dr. Martin Silberberg decided to apply these insights in a broader context and established a textbook writing and editing company. Before writing his own book, he worked on biochemistry, chemistry, and physics texts for several major college publishers. He resides with his wife and child in Massachusetts. For relaxation, Martin sings, cooks, and walks in the woods.

Patricia Amateis

Patricia Amateis

Dr. Patricia Amateis got her B.S. in Chemistry from Concord University in West Virginia and a Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry from Virginia Tech. Pat has been on the faculty of the Chemistry Department at Virginia Tech for over 26 years, teaching Analytical Chemistry and General Chemistry. For the past 14 years, Professor Amateis has served as Director of General Chemistry, responsible for the oversight of both the lecture and lab portions of the large General Chemistry program.

Patricia has taught thousands of college students during her career and has been awarded the Alumni Teaching Award, the University Sporn Award for Introductory Teaching, and the William E. Wine Award for a history of university teaching excellence.

Rashmi Venkateswaran

Sophie Lavieri

Silberberg’s Chemistry: The Molecular Nature of Matter and Change is renowned for setting the standard amongst general chemistry textbooks.

Chemistry: The Molecular Nature of Matter and Change, 2nd Canadian Edition, (PDF) continues to uphold that unparalleled reputation with the most correct macroscopic-to-molecular illustrations, consistent step-by-step worked problems, and a broad collection of end-of-chapter problems, including a wide range of problems and applications. IUPAC consistency, a combination of metric and SI units, and expanded coverage of organic chemistry in Silberberg address the requirements of many post-secondary Canadian institutions course curriculum.
