Lisa Maurizio

Dr. Lisa Maurizio is a Professor at Bates College with degrees from Wellesley, Princeton, and experience teaching at several universities. She offers courses in Greek and Latin literature, Roman love poetry, and gender politics in ancient Greece. Her research focuses on Greek religion and Delphic divination. Notably, she co-organized an international conference at Bates in 2014, producing proceedings published in 2016. Her works include “Interpretative Strategies for Delphic Oracles” and “Technopaegnia in Heraclitus.” She authored Classical Mythology in Context and two plays on Greek myths, produced by Animus Ensemble.

Maurizio’s Classical Mythology in Context 2nd Edition offers a deeply contextualized examination of classical mythology, integrating a wide range of ancient sources alongside comparative perspectives, theoretical frameworks, and artistic interpretations. This comprehensive approach not only encourages students to actively engage with and delve into ancient myths but also helps them grasp these narratives within larger interpretative frameworks that enhance their understanding.

This work, Classical Mythology in Context, 2E, is organized into a modular structure that aligns seamlessly with the four essential components of a classical mythology course: history, theory, comparison, and reception. By doing so, it aims to provide a holistic understanding that enriches students’ appreciation of mythology’s enduring influence across various domains.
