About The Author

Erwin Chemerinsky

Erwin Chemerinsky

Erwin Chemerinsky is a prominent American legal scholar recognized for his expertise in U.S. Constitutional law and federal civil procedure. Since 2017, he has served as the dean of the UC Berkeley School of Law. Before this role, he was the founding dean of the University of California, Irvine School of Law from 2008 to 2017.

In 2016, Chemerinsky was honored as a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. In 2017, National Jurist magazine named him the most influential figure in U.S. legal education. His leadership continued to shine when, in 2021, he was appointed president-elect of the Association of American Law Schools.

A leading textbook by a well-known scholar, Constitutional Law, 6th Edition, (PDF) is known for its brief, yet comprehensive presentation. Professor Chemerinsky’s unique approach for the Sixth Edition offers the law solely through case excerpts and his own essays. With the author’s background and context information, the law becomes more swiftly understood. A flexible organization accommodates a range of course structures; no chapter supposes that students have read preceding material.

New to the 6th Edition:

  • Important reorganizations of some of the chapters (including chapters on federal limits on religion and state power clauses)
  • New cases decided since the 5e, including those on partisan gerrymandering, the travel ban, freedom of speech, state action, and the religion clauses

Students and professors will benefit from:

  • Renowned authorship
  • Concise, yet comprehensive presentation
  • Flexible organization—no chapter supposes that students have read the rest
  • Materials and cases have been edited to be as ideologically neutral as possible
  • Distinctive approach offers the law solely through case excerpts and author-written essays
  • Accessible, straightforward writing style that presents context and background information for greater understanding
