Designed for entry-level classes in law enforcement – Top-rated guide to law enforcement

Criminal Justice Today: An Introduction for the Modern Era maintains its position as the benchmark for introductory texts in the field of law enforcement. Its extensive content delves into the crime landscape in the United States and the three customary components of the law enforcement system: law enforcement agencies, judiciary, and penal facilities. By centering on the dichotomy between personal liberty and societal control, Schmalleger prompts students to assess the advantages and disadvantages of the American legal system. The 15th edition focuses specifically on racial aspects in law enforcement, implementation of force by police, and civil liberties — scrutinized in light of recent incidents of police shootings and the subsequent “battle against law enforcement” that collectively pose a threat to national harmony.
