Scott L. Vandenberg

Scott L. Vandenberg

Dr. Scott L. Vandenberg has over 27 years of experience teaching computer science to college students in computer science and business. Before completing his Ph.D., he worked briefly at Procter & Gamble headquarters, Standard Oil Research, and IBM Research. He taught for two years at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst before joining the faculty at Siena College in 1993. His primary teaching interests are in database management systems and introductory computer science, with research, consulting, and publications also focused on those areas. Some of his earlier scholarly work included the development of data models, query languages, and algebras for object-oriented databases and databases involving sequential and tree-structured data. More recent research has involved applying database technology to help solve data science problems in biology and epidemiology.

Hands-on exploration of database fundamentals. Database Concepts 9th Edition (PDF) offers college students practical help creating and managing small databases from two leading database authorities. The textbook focuses on database concepts rather than the features and functions of a particular product, making it flexible enough to work with the instructor’s preferred software. Data sets for three sample databases run throughout portions of the text so students can practice working with complete databases. Three running projects challenge learners to apply concepts and techniques to actual business situations. In the 9th edition, Microsoft® Office 2019, particularly Microsoft Access 2019, is now the primary software used and is shown running on Microsoft Windows 10.
