About The Author

Alexander Johnson

Alexander Johnson

Dr. Alexander D. Johnson received his Ph.D. from Harvard University and is the Director of the Biochemistry, Cell Biology, Genetics, and Developmental Biology Graduate Program at the University of California, San Francisco, along with being a Professor of Microbiology and Immunology at the same college.

Bruce Alberts

Bruce Alberts

Dr. Bruce Michael Alberts is a scientist at the University of California, San Francisco, and holds the Chancellor's Leadership Chair in Biochemistry and Biophysics for Science and Education.

He has made significant contributions to our understanding of the protein complexes that allow for chromosomal replication when living cells divide. He is best known as the co-author of Molecular Biology of the Cell, a "canonical, important, and best-selling scientific textbook," and as the Editor-in-Chief of Science magazine.

David Morgan

David Morgan

Dr. David Morgan is a Professor in the Department of Physiology and Biochemistry & Biophysics at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). He received an undergraduate degree in animal physiology from the University of Calgary, followed in 1986 by a Ph.D. from UCSF with Richard Roth.

Following postdoctoral studies with William Rutter and Harold Varmus at UCSF, he started his laboratory there in 1990. His research interests are centered on the biochemical mechanisms and regulatory circuits that govern cell-cycle progression.

Karen Hopkin

Keith Roberts

Keith Roberts

Dr. Keith Roberts earned his Ph.D. from the University of Cambridge and was Deputy Director of the John Innes Centre, Norwich. He is currently an Emeritus Professor at the University of East Anglia.

Martin Raff

Martin Raff

Dr. Martin Raff got his MD from McGill University and is an emeritus professor of biology at the Medical Research Council Laboratory for Molecular Cell Biology at University College London. He is a foreign member of the National Academy of Sciences.

Peter Walter

Peter Walter

Dr. Peter Walter is a German-American molecular biologist and biochemist who is a Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) Investigator and a Professor at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF).

Peter studied at the Freie Universität Berlin and went on to Vanderbilt University for his MS in Organic Chemistry in 1977 and The Rockefeller University for his Ph.D. in Cell Biology in 1981.

Walter is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the National Academy of Medicine, and the National Academy of Inventors, as well as the National Academy of Medicine. The 2014 Shaw Prize in Life Science and Medicine, the 2014 Lasker Award for Basic Medical Research, the 2015 Vilcek Prize in Biomedical Science, the 2018 Breakthrough Prize in Life Sciences, and the 2020 UCSF Lifetime Achievement in Mentoring Award are just a few of his recent honours.
