Yunus A. Cengel

Dr. Yunus A. Çengel is Professor Emeritus of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Nevada, Reno. He got his B.S. in mechanical engineering from Istanbul Technical University (Turkey) and his M.S. and Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from North Carolina State University. His areas of interest are energy efficiency, energy policies, heat transfer enhancement, renewable energy, and engineering education. He was the director of the Industrial Assessment Center (IAC) at the University of Nevada, Reno, from 1996 to 2000.

He has led teams of engineering students to numerous manufacturing facilities in Northern Nevada and California to perform industrial assessments. He has prepared energy conservation, waste minimization, and productivity enhancement reports for them. He has also served as an advisor for various government organizations and corporations.

The aim of Fundamentals of Thermal-Fluid Sciences, 5th Edition, (PDF) is to include the basic principles of fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, and heat transfer. Various real-world engineering examples are provided to give students a feel for how thermal-fluid sciences are applied in engineering practice. By highlighting the physics and physical arguments, students are able to develop an intuitive understanding of thermal-fluid sciences. This latest Fifth Edition includes sufficient material to give teachers flexibility and to accommodate their preferences on the right blend of fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, and heat transfer for their students. By careful selection of topics, a teacher can spend one-third, one-half, or two-thirds of the course on thermodynamics and the rest on chosen topics of fluid mechanics and heat transfer.

McGraw-Hill’s Connect, is also available as an optional, add-on item. Connect is the only integrated learning system that enables university students by continuously adapt to provide precisely what they need, how they need it, when they need it, so that class time is more effective. Connect allows the professor to assign homework, tests, and quizzes, easily and automatically grades, and records the scores of the student’s work. Problems are randomized to avoid sharing of answers and may also have a “multi-step solution” which assists move the students’ learning along if they experience difficulty.
