Dr. Laura E. Berk, Ph.D., is Distinguished Professor of Psychology Emerita at Illinois State University. She earned her bachelor's from UC Berkeley and her master's and doctorate in child development from the University of Chicago. Berk's research centers on early childhood development, particularly the influence of school environments, private speech, and make-believe play on self-regulation. Her books include Private Speech: From Social Interaction to Self-Regulation, Scaffolding Children’s Learning, and Awakening Children’s Minds. She authored three textbooks and serves as associate editor of the Journal of Cognitive Education and Psychology. Berk contributes to volumes on early childhood development and is writing a chapter for the Handbook of Play and Learning in Early Childhood. She is a fellow of the American Psychological Association, Division 7.
