Sylvia Mader

Sylvia Mader

Dr. Sylvia S. Mader has authored several nationally recognized biology texts published by McGraw Hill. She is educated at Harvard University, Bryn Mawr College, Tufts University, and Nova Southeastern University and holds degrees in both Education and Biology. Over the years, she has taught at the University of Massachusetts, Lowell; Suffolk University; Massachusetts Bay Community College; and Nathan Mayhew Seminars. Dr. Mader's ability to reach out to science-shy students led to the writing of her first textbook, Inquiry into Life. Highly acclaimed for her crisp and entertaining writing style, Dr. Mader's books have become models for others who write in biology.

Although her writing schedule is always quite demanding, she enjoys exploring and visiting the various ecosystems of the biosphere. Her several trips to the Caribbean coral reefs and Florida Everglades resulted in talks she has given to different groups around the country. She has visited the tundra in Alaska, the Sonoran Desert in Arizona, the taiga in the Canadian Rockies, and tropical rain forests in Australia and South America. A photo safari to the Serengeti in Kenya resulted in several photographs for her texts. She was also a member of a group of biology educators who traveled to China to meet with their Chinese counterparts and exchange ideas about teaching modern-day biology. She was thrilled to think of walking in Darwin’s steps when she journeyed to the Galápagos Islands with a group of biology educators.

Inquiry into Life: Relevancy Update 15th edition (PDF) is an excellent source for basic biological concepts and processes with a human emphasis. From the unique delivery of biology content to the complete integration of the textbook with technology, to the time tested art program, best-selling expert author Dr. Sylvia Mader has formed a teaching system that will both motivate and enable your college students to appreciate and understand the wonders of all areas of biology. Inquiry into Life Relevancy Update 15.1e emphasizes the application of all areas of biology to the knowledge of human concerns, what the undergrad students are able to relate to. This distinctive ebook was developed to stand apart from all other non-majors textbooks with a unique approach, unparalleled art, and a succinct, straightforward writing style that has been acclaimed by both reviewers and users. In this updated 15th edition, the authors have focused on the concept of inquiry and a university student’s inherent desire to learn. To do this, they integrated a time tested, traditional learning system with modern digital and pedagogical approaches designed to engage and stimulate today’s college student.

The area and subject of Biology is ever-changing and this updated fifteenth version reflects that. This relevancy update includes new Relevancy Modules in Connect. These modules demonstrate the connections between biological content and topics that are of interest to our society as a whole. Each module consists of an overview of basic scientific concepts, an introductory video, and then a closer look at the application of these concepts to the topic. Discussion and assessment questions, specific to the modules, are also available. These modules are available as a supplementary eBook to the existing textbook within Connect (sold separately), and may be assigned by the instructor for use in a variety of ways in the classroom. Examples of topics covered include fermentation science, cancer biology, antibiotic resistance, weed evolution, biology of weight gain, mega crops, and climate change. Content in the textbook has also been updated to reflect the current and latest trends.
