Dr. David Mark Hillis is an evolutionary biologist, and the Alfred W. Roark Centennial Professor of Biology at the University of Texas at Austin. He is best known for his studies of phylogeny, molecular evolution, and vertebrate systematics. He created the popular Hillis Plot depiction of the evolutionary tree of life.

Dr. Sally D. Hacker is a Professor at Oregon State University, where she has been a faculty member since 2004. She has experience instructing classes in marine biology, community ecology, and introductory ecology. For college students who are interested in ecology and field trips, she is especially passionate about promoting active and experiential learning. The study of natural and managed ecosystems under various conditions of species interactions and global change is the focus of Dr. Hacker's research.

Her most recent research has concentrated on the protective function of coastal ecosystems in reducing vulnerability to climate change. She is the author or coauthor of numerous articles and book chapters examining topics in coastal community ecology and ecosystem functions and services, in addition to the textbooks Ecology and Life: The Science of Biology.
