Berdell R. Funke

Dr. Berdell R. Funke earned his Ph.D., M.S., and B.S. degrees in microbiology from Kansas State University. He has dedicated his professional career to serving as a professor of microbiology at North Dakota State University. His teaching portfolio includes introductory microbiology, laboratory sections, general microbiology, food microbiology, soil microbiology, clinical parasitology, and pathogenic microbiology. As a research scientist at the North Dakota State Experiment Station, he has published numerous papers in the fields of soil microbiology and food microbiology.

Christine L. Case

Christine L. Case

Dr. Christine L. Case is a professor of microbiology at Skyline College in San Bruno, California, where she has taught for the past 47 years. She earned her Ed.D. in Curriculum and Instruction from Nova Southeastern University and her M.A. in Microbiology from San Francisco State University. She previously served as Director for the Society for Industrial Microbiology and is an active member of the American Society for Microbiology (ASM). She has received the ASM and California Hayward Outstanding Educator Awards. Chris was also honored with the SACNAS Distinguished Community College Mentor Award for her dedication to her students, several of whom have presented at undergraduate research conferences and received awards.

Gerard J. Tortora

Professor Gerard Jerry Tortora is Professor of Biology and former Coordinator at Bergen Community College in Paramus, NJ, USA, where he teaches human anatomy and physiology as well as microbiology. Gerard received his bachelor's degree in biology from Fairleigh Dickinson University and his master's degree in science education from Montclair State College. He is a member of many professional organizations, such as the American Society of Microbiology (ASM), American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society (HAPS), National Education Association (NEA), and the Metropolitan Association of College and University Biologists (MACUB).

Above all, Tortora is devoted to his students and their aspirations. In recognition of this commitment, he was the recipient of MACUB's 1992 President's Memorial Award. In 1996, Jerry received a National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development (NISOD) excellence award from the University of Texas and was selected to represent Bergen Community College in a campaign to increase awareness of the contributions of community colleges to higher education. Tortora is also the author of several best-selling science books and laboratory manuals, a calling that often requires an additional forty hours per week beyond his teaching responsibilities.
