About The Author

David J. Morrissey

David J. Morrissey

Dr. David J. Morrissey, professor of chemistry, is a prominent leader in the area of nuclear chemistry research that centers on the production and use of the most exotic, short-lived nuclei and, in turn, this knowledge is applied to produce beams of exotic radioactive ions. Dr. Morrissey was part of a team of scientists at the MSU National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory (NSCL) that first developed the instruments to provide beams of exotic nuclei for research and then, based on that, helped to successfully land the project to design and build the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB) at MSU. David holds joint appointments in the Department of Chemistry, FRIB and NSCL. He served as associate director for nuclear science at the NSCL from 1995-1999 and 2009-2012, and as associate director for operations since 2015.

Dr. David received a B.S. with distinction in chemistry from the Pennsylvania State University, his Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of California, Berkeley, and was a postdoctoral fellow at Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory.

Throughout his career, Dr. David Morrissey has served as chair of a number of international conferences on nuclear science, and as chair of the American Chemical Society, Division of Nuclear Chemistry and Technology. His honors include the 2011 Glenn T. Seaborg Award for Nuclear Chemistry given by the ACS Division of Nuclear Chemistry and Technology.

Glenn T. Seaborg

Glenn T. Seaborg

Dr. Glenn T. Seaborg, PhD, was a professor of chemistry at the University of California, Berkeley, and co-founder and chairman of the Lawrence Hall of Science, USA. He is credited with discovering 10 new elements, including plutonium and one that now bears his name, seaborgium. In 1951, Dr. Glenn Seaborg and his colleague, Edwin McMillan, were awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for research into trans-uranium elements.

Walter D. Loveland

Written by established experts in the field, Modern Nuclear Chemistry 2nd Edition features in-depth discussions of proven scientific principles, current trends, and applications of nuclear chemistry to the sciences and engineering.

  • Provides up-to-date coverage of the latest research and examines the theoretical and practical aspects of nuclear and radiochemistry
  • Adds discussion of math tools and simulations to demonstrate various phenomena, new chapters on Nuclear Forensics, Nuclear Medicine, and Particle Physics, and updates to all other chapters
  • Presents the basic physical principles of nuclear and radiochemistry in a succinct fashion, requiring no basic knowledge of quantum mechanics
  • Includes additional in-chapter sample problems with solutions to help students

Building on the legacy of its successful predecessor, this revision of Modern Nuclear Chemistry 2e brings together a detailed and rigorous perspective on both the  practical and theoretical aspects of this rapidly evolving field.

Requiring no previous knowledge of quantum mechanics and written at a level suitable for advanced undergraduate or graduate courses in science and engineering, this book is designed to be used as a textbook and a reference for practicing scientists and engineers. Extensive appendices facilitate quick reference, and the inclusion of advanced materials and references appeals to those who desire a deeper immersion in the subject.

Reviews of 1st edition: “…an excellent resource for libraries and laboratories supporting programs requiring familiarity with nuclear processes …” (CHOICE) AND “… an authoritative, comprehensive but succinct, state-of-the-art textbook ….” (The Chemical Educator)
