Francis Carey

Dr. Francis A. Carey, a native of Pennsylvania, received his education in the Philadelphia public schools before attending Drexel University and earning a B.S. in chemistry in 1959 and a Ph.D. in 1963, respectively. He served in the military and completed postdoctoral studies at Harvard before being hired to the University of Virginia's chemistry faculty in 1966. He frequently instructed two-semester lecture courses in general chemistry and organic chemistry until retiring in 2000.

Professor Carey has co-authored more than 40 research papers on synthetic and mechanistic organic chemistry with his students. In addition to this book, he is a co-author of two other two-volume treatments for graduate students and advanced undergraduates: Organic Chemistry: A Brief Course and Advanced Organic Chemistry with Richard J. Sundberg.

Robert C. Atkins

Based on the U.S. textbook Organic Chemistry: A Brief Cours (PDF) this Organic Chemistry, A Brief Course Asia Adaptation (4th edition) continues to guide a diverse group of organic chemistry students by selectively revealing the logic of organic chemistry through a carefully designed organization, problem-solving, pedagogy, and illustrations.

A textbook that is both modern in outlook and selective in coverage, this 4th Edition Asia Adaptation is further enhanced by the introduction of the following:

  • Chapter previews to aid students’ revision prior to examinations.
  • Molecular orbital theory which emphasizes the visual understanding of chemical bonds and reactions.
  • Curved-arrow notation which illustrates how organic reactions occur in terms of the movement of electrons.
  • The topic of stereochemistry early in the ebook so that the college students have a better grasp of the concept of organic compounds in three-dimensional structures and methods of interconversion.

NOTE: This ebook only includes a scanned copy of the book in PDF. The text in it is not selectable or searchable.
