The National Jurist highlighted Plain English for Lawyers 6th Edition in its August 2021 selection of “Three Books to Read During Law School,” mentioning, “This ebook speaks for itself. It delivers a concise burst of knowledge: offering practical advice to enhance your legal writing while also introducing many essential terms you’ll encounter as you enter the legal profession.”
For nearly four decades, Plain English for Lawyers has been a go-to resource for law students, instructors in legal writing, attorneys, and judges. The newer sixth edition, now co-written by Amy Sloan, refreshes this well-regarded text with new exercises in each chapter while maintaining the effective methods that gave it its status in the discipline. It continues to be a compact guide, designed to be approachable and not overwhelming for busy law students.
In January 2005, the Legal Writing Institute honored Wydick with its Golden Pen Award for authoring Plain English for Lawyers, 6th Edition. This nonprofit organization serves as a platform for dialogue and scholarship focused on legal writing, analysis, and research. The Institute boasts over 1,300 members from all ABA-accredited law schools in the United States, along with law educators from abroad, English instructors, and practicing attorneys.
