    About The Author

    Mary Cunningham

    Mary Cunningham

Dr. Mary Ann Cunningham teaches geography, geographic information systems (GIS), and environmental studies at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, New York.

In her research, GIS is used to evaluate landscape-level issues with biodiversity and conservation. She is particularly curious about the causes of fragmentation in grassland environments and how it affects the composition of bird communities. Working landscapes, resource use, remnant wildlife habitat, and aesthetic landscape concerns interact in a complex and fascinating way in the agricultural landscapes where she has been conducting research.

At the University of Oregon and the University of Minnesota, Mary Ann obtained an MA and a Ph.D. in geography, respectively.

    William Cunningham

    William Cunningham

Professor William Cunningham spent 36 years teaching at the University of Minnesota, where he also served as director of the Center for Environmental Learning and Leadership, the Institute for Social, Economic, and Ecological Sustainability, and the Departments of Botany, Genetics, and Cell Biology.

After earning his Ph.D. in Botany from the University of Texas in 1963, he worked as a postdoctoral scholar at Purdue University for two years. He has held visiting scholar positions at different American universities and research centers as well as in Sweden, Norway, Indonesia, and China.

Dr. Cunningham has dedicated his career to biology undergraduate education and curriculum improvement.
