About The Author

James M. Henslin

James M. Henslin

Dr. James M. Henslin, who was born in Minnesota, graduated from high school and junior college in California and from college in Indiana. Awarded scholarships, he earned his Master’s and Ph.D. degrees in sociology at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. After this, James was awarded a postdoctoral fellowship from the National Institute of Mental Health, and spent a year studying how people adjust to the suicide of a family member. His primary interests in sociology are the sociology of everyday life, international relations and deviance. Dr. Henslin has also published widely in sociology journals, including American Journal of Sociology and Social Problems.

After completing his doctorate, James joined the faculty at Southern Illinois University, Edwardsville, where he is Professor Emeritus of Sociology. James enjoys fishing and reading. He especially enjoys visiting and living in other cultures, for this brings him face to face with behaviors and ways of thinking that he cannot take for granted, experiences that “make sociological principles come alive.”

Adapted from Henslins best-selling comprehensive textbook, Henslin’s Sociology: A Down-To-Earth Approach Core Concepts 6th edition (PDF) provides in-depth coverage of 10 high-priority topics that are the foundation of many introductory sociology courses.

This unique PDF etextbook offers an economical and concise format without sacrificing depth of coverage. Unlike a “brief” or “essentials” textbook, the 10 chapters that makeup Core Concepts are not edited down from a longer ebook. Instead, they provide full coverage of those topics that instructors emphasize the most in a one-semester or one-term introductory sociology course. Like James Henslin’s other books, it features the author’s familiar “down-to-earth” approach and personal writing style that highlight the sociology of everyday life. With personal reflection, wit, and real illuminating examples, Henslin shares with readers a passion for sociology unmatched by any other introductory textbook. In addition to this trademark down-to-earth approach, other distinctive features include: the globalization of capitalism, comparative perspectives, and visual presentations of sociology.

MySocLab (sold separately) is an integral part of the Henslin learning program. Engaging activities and assessments provide a teaching a learning system that helps sociology students see the world through a sociological lens. With MySocLab, college students can develop critical thinking skills through writing, explore real-world data through the new Social Explorer, and watch the latest entries in the Core Concept Video Series.
