About The Author

Terry T. Sincich

Terry T. Sincich

Dr. Terry Sincich obtained his Ph.D. in Statistics from the University of Florida in 1980. Terry is an Associate Professor in the Information Systems & Decision Sciences Department at the University of South Florida in Tampa. He is responsible for teaching advanced statistics to all doctoral candidates, as well as teaching basic statistics to all undergraduates, in the College of Business Administration. Dr. Sincich has published many articles in such good journals like the Journal of the American Statistical Association, Academy of Management Journal, International Journal of Forecasting, and Auditing: A Journal of Practice & Theory.

William Mendenhall

William Mendenhall

Dr. William Mendenhall (late) was the founding chairman of the statistics department at the University of Florida (UF) and served the department from 1963 until 1977. He got his Ph.D. in statistics from North Carolina State University and was a professor of mathematics at Bucknell University before teaching at UF. Best known as a prolific textbook author in statistics, his textbook Introduction to Probability and Statistics has been used throughout the United States and the rest of the world as a canonical introduction to the subject. Dr. Mendenhall retired as professor emeritus in 1978 and continued his textbook writing until he died in 2009.

Statistics for Engineering and the Sciences, 6th Edition, (PDF) is designed for a two-semester introductory course on statistics for students majoring in engineering or physical sciences. This popular textbook continues to teach students the basic concepts of data description and statistical inference and the statistical methods necessary for real-world applications. Students will understand how to collect and analyze data and think critically about the results.

New to the Sixth Edition:

  • Introduction of the case studies at the beginning of each chapter
  • Many new and updated exercises based on contemporary engineering and scientific-related studies and actual data
  • New section on using regression residuals to check the assumptions required in a simple linear regression analysis
  • More statistical software printouts and corresponding instructions for use that reflect the latest versions of the SAS, SPSS, and MINITAB software
  • Streamlined material on all basic sampling concepts, such as random sampling and sample survey designs, which gives students an earlier introduction to key sampling issues
  • New examples on comparing matched pairs versus independent samples, selecting the sample size for a designed experiment, and analyzing a two-factor experiment with quantitative factors
  • The first several chapters of the book identify the objectives of statistics, explain how to describe data, and present the basic concepts of probability. The text then introduces the two methods for making inferences about population parameters: estimation with confidence intervals and hypothesis testing. The remaining chapters extend these concepts to cover other topics helpful in analyzing engineering and scientific data, including categorical data analysis, regression analysis, model building, analysis of variance for designed experiments, nonparametric statistics, statistical quality control, and product and system reliability.
