About The Author

Barry Chess

Barry Chess

Dr. Barry R. Chess has taught microbiology at Pasadena City College (PCC) for over 20 years. Before that, while studying at the University of California and the California State University, he conducted research into the expression of genes involved in the development of muscle and bone.

At PCC, beyond his usual presence in the microbiology laboratory and lecture hall, Dr. Chess has developed a course in human genetics, taught non-majors and majors biology, helped to found a biotechnology program on campus, and regularly supervises students completing independent research projects in the life sciences. Over the past several years, his interests have focused on innovative methods of teaching that lead to greater student success. He has reviewed and written cases for the National Center for Case Study Teaching in Science and contributed to the ebook Science Stories You Can Count On: 51 Case Studies with Quantitative Reasoning in Biology. Professor Chess has presented papers and talks on the effective use of case studies in the classroom, the use of digital tools to enhance learning etc. In addition to Laboratory Applications in Microbiology, he is the co-author of the lecture textbook Foundations in Microbiology, now in its 11th edition.

Kathleen Park Talaro

Kathleen Park Talaro

Dr. Kathleen P. Talaro is a microbiologist, author, educator, and artist who works in a variety of fields. She has had a passion for microbiology since she was a child growing up on an Idaho farm, where she was first enthralled by microscopic animals she could barely see swimming in a pond.

Her fascination with microorganisms prompted her to major in biology at Idaho State University, where she also worked as a teaching assistant and scientific illustrator for one of her professors. She attended Arizona State University, Occidental College, California Institute of Technology, and California State University to further her studies. Dr. Talaro has spent 30 years at Pasadena City College teaching microbiology and biology classes, during which time she has established a new curriculum and modified laboratory experiments. She was also a co-author of earlier editions of Microbiology: A Systems Approach with Kelly Cowan.

ISE Talaro’s Foundations in Microbiology, 12th Edition (PDF) is an allied health microbiology textbook with a taxonomic approach to the disease chapters. It offers an engaging and accessible writing style through the use of case studies and analogies to thoroughly explain complex microbiology concepts.
