The Urban Forest: Cultivating Green Infrastructure for People and the Environment, (PDF) emphasizes on urban “green infrastructure” – the interrelated web of vegetated spaces like parks,  street trees, and peri-urban forests that offer essential ecosystem services in cities. The green infrastructure approach represents the idea that these services, such as pollutant filtration, storm-water runoff control and amenities for outdoor recreation, are just as importantfor a modern city as those provided by any other type of infrastructure. Guaranteeing that these ecosystem services are indeed delivered in an equitable and sustainable way needs knowledge of the physical characteristics of trees and urban green spaces, tools for managing the complex cultural and  social dynamics, and an understanding of how these features can be combined in better governance practices. By conveying the findings and recommendations of COST Action FP1204 GreenInUrbs, this volume summarizes the collaborative efforts of practitioners and researchers from across Europe to address these challenges.
