About The Author

David Johnson

Dr. David Johnson is a Political Science Professor at Cape Breton University (Canada) who enjoys teaching about Canadian government, politics, and public administration.

His research interests range from Canadian public administration and public policy to human rights policy, as well as public sector management and human resource policy and the promotion of Indigenous cultural tourism. He has also broadened his research interests in the Commonwealth to include public sector management and leadership development.

Thinking Government: Public Administration and Politics in Canada, 4th Edition, (PDF) introduces students to power relations between elected politicians and unelected public servants, while also including important topics such as the institutions of the federal government, human resources, and financial management, and accountability and responsibility. Johnson examines the ways that the ideological framework of this country outlines what Canadians, their political parties, and their governments think about policy actions and the responsibilities of public servants.

Johnson’s Thinking Government Fourth Edition (Canadian) is reviewed and updated throughout and addresses the legacy of the Harper government on public administration in Canada. Comprehensive pedagogical supports for college students stress key issues in public administration to help link theories to the reality of practice.

Review

The Thinking Government: Public Administration and Politics in Canada 4e answers every question a student, a course instructor, or a public servant might have about the current state of Canadian public administration. It clearly and thoroughly explains the current functioning and issues in public administration. Undergraduate and graduate students, public administration scholars, and public servants should keep a copy on hand. — Caroline Dufour, York University’s School of Public Policy and Administration
